Mesa Arizona

Mesa is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. It is the 2nd largest city in the metro Phoenix area and the 3rd largest city in the state, following Tucson, Arizona.

Mesa is one of fastest growing cities in the nation. The census estimate from July 1, 2002, put the city's population at 426,841. Mesa is the largest suburban city in the U.S. and 2nd largest in North America after Mississauga, Ontario Canada. Mesa, Arizona has a larger population than the cities of St. Louis, MO; Pittsburgh, PA; and Salt Lake City, UT.

The city was founded in January of the year 1878. Mesa, of moderm times, was founded by Mormon pioneers and the population is still approximately 25% Mormon.


Geography of Mesa Arizona

The evelation of Mesa is approximately 1,240 ft and the city is located at 33°24'40" North, 111°44'47" West (33.411199, -111.746438)1. The city is stretched out over a mesa (plateau) that stands about 100 ft in higher elevation than Phoenix. Thus, explaining the name given to it by the Mormon settlers.

Per the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 324.2 km² (125.2 mi²). 323.7 km² (125.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area of Mesa is 0.16% water.

Demographics of Mesa Arizona
As of the census of 2000, there is a population of 396,375 people. There are 146,642 households, and a total of 99,862 families residing in the city. The population density in the city is 3,171.3/mi² and there are 175,701 housing units. The average density is 1,405.7/mi².

The racial makeup of the city is 81% White, 2.52% Black or African American, 1.66% Native American, 1.49% Asian, 0.24% Pacific Islander, 9.66% from other races, and 2.79% from two or more races. 19.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 146,642 households, which 33% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53% are married couples cohabitating, 11% of the households have a female householder with no husband present, and 32% are not families. 24% of all households contain individuals and 9% have someone living alone who is 65 or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.20.

The Population of the city is spread out with 27% under 18 years old, 11% are between 18 and 24, 30% are from 25 to 44, 18% from 45 and 64, and 13% who are 65 or older. 32 years old is the median age. There are 98 males for every 100 females. For every 96 males age 18 and over, there are 100 females in Mesa.

The household median income is $42,817, and the family median income is $49,232. Females have a median of $27,000 versus $35,950 for males. The per capita income is $19,601. 9% of the population and 6% of families are below the poverty line. Of the total population, 11% of those under the age of 18 and 7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Williams Air Force Base was closed in 1993 and is now Williams Gateway Airport.

Mesa, Arizona is also the home of Falcon Field. Originally, it was opened at the beginning of WWII for the training of British RAF pilots, it since was turned over to the City of Mesa after the war.
